My friend Jon ran this old R.E.M. video on his site, Phawker, today. And man does it takes me back. He posted it in connection with a piece he linked out to about the 25th anniversary of Fables of the Reconstruction. I’m having trouble believing that I’m actually old enough to remember an album that old. In my mind, a 25-year-old album is a Beatles or Stones record, not something that I owned on cassette in high school.
Aside from this song, which is now and probably will remain one my favorite R.E.M. tunes, and maybe “Can’t Get There From Here,” I never cared much for this album.
Life’s Rich Pageant was the one that I really obsessed on for months when it came out. That might’ve had something to do with the fact that it was like one of maybe five CDs I owned at the time.
Back then I used watch this video and the one for “Fall On Me” over and over again (I used to tape them off of MTV), trying to extract something deep from them. Now they seem like crappy first year film student projects.
